The overall goal of the Water Action Team is to contribute to an integrated water management program, balancing our need to preserve and protect our water resources for future generations, while also providing for their ongoing use and improved public access. Our vision is for an Ellsworth that values and has access to thriving aquatic ecosystems and abundant clear water in its river, streams, lakes, and aquifers, all of which are enhancing our region's present and will strengthen our future.
Specific areas of focus for the Water Action Team are being addressed by: the Our Union River Committee, the Water Quality Committee, and the Historic Preservation Commission.
The 2026 Union River Watershed Summit & Race brought together community members, Indigenous leaders, scientists, conservation organizations, and outdoor enthusiasts for three days of learning, connection, and celebration centered on the Union River watershed. Through presentations, discussions, and time spent on the river, participants were invited to explore this watershed’s environmental, cultural, and economic importance, as well as opportunities for long-term stewardship and sustainability. Organized by Green Ellsworth’s Union River Watershed Action Team with support from regional nonprofit partners, the hybrid event highlighted the power of community collaboration in shaping a healthy future for the Union River.
