Duties:
Works with experienced organic farmers/gardeners/Master Gardener Volunteers, Elementary and High School students and other volunteers to successfully launch the first full growing season of an Everybody Harvests Community Garden in Ellsworth Falls.
Sustainably manages a 1 acre growing area on prime soil and farmland of state-wide significance located on Frenchman Bay Conservancy’s Whitney Forest.
Applies organic practices in all aspects of garden management (eg. maintain healthy soil; maximize healthy, robust crop production, sustainable pollinator management, develop a composting system, etc) such that these practices will serve as educational models for volunteers and the public
Demonstrates strong leadership skills in overseeing and engaging in the planting, care and harvesting of garden crops while engaging and preparing others to contribute to this effort
Works closely with Green Ellsworth’s website and communications manager to generate public engagement in the maintenance and harvesting of the garden and public educational and nutritional programming
Works closely with Healthy Acadia’s Gleaning program, school garden and food services staff as well as volunteers to minimize any food waste and maximize distribution of produce to food security organizations, school and seniors meal programs.
With guidance from experienced farmers and gardeners, expands the existing irrigation system, introduces moisture monitoring mechanisms, develops and implements a cover cropping plan as well as successive crop rotation strategies.
Develops a digital system for garden record keeping (planting and harvesting dates, amount of produce harvested and by whom, levels of volunteer/public engagement in various aspects of the garden, disease and pest management, etc) and photographic documentation
Assists in planning and delivery of public gardening and nutritional programming
Contributes to broader Green Ellsworth Downeast Food Systems planning and public consultations and engagement
Timelines and rate of pay: 10-12 weeks, 40 hours/week, $19/hour
Working conditions:
Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, working on uneven ground, using basic gardening/landscaping tools and equipment
Must be willing to work primarily out of doors in a wide range of weather conditions
Must be capable of digital record management and communication (access to a cell phone and a computer, capacity to use email, set up google drives and run basic software and applications)
Will require flexibility in scheduling to accommodate some early morning work times and/or late afternoon/evening harvesting and public programming
Qualifications:
Vegetable gardening or farming experience
Academic qualifications relating to sustainable agriculture, soil science, food systems development and planning or related fields
Research interest or experience in sustainable agriculture, adaptation of growing practices to climate change, soil science, agricultural pollinator management, food systems, sustainable waste management or related fields—desirable but not required
Strong digital writing/communications and data management skills; facility with social media desirable
Demonstrated leadership skills; supervisory experience desirable
Demonstrated capacity to both work independently and contribute effectively to team based projects
Demonstrated expertise in effectively generating public engagement and managing volunteers
Experience in developing and delivering educational programming for youth, seniors and/or the general public
