Green Ellsworth, in collaboration with the Maine Climate Science Information Exchange (MCSIE), seeks a motivated Community Garden Intern (as Community Garden Manager) for the 2026 growing season. This role is designed for an individual to gain hands-on experience by assisting in the launch of an "Everybody Harvests" micro-farm. You will work as part of a supportive team to bridge sustainable agriculture with climate adaptation and regional food system planning.
OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW
Location: Primarily at the Frenchman Bay Conservancy Whitney Forest in Ellsworth.
Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week).

POTENTIAL SCOPE OF WORK
The Intern will support the management of a one-acre micro-farm to ensure the community has access to healthy, locally grown produce.
Agricultural Support: Assist in the planting, care, and harvesting of vegetables, fruit crops, and pollinator strips.
Organic Practices: Help apply organic methods to maintain soil health and develop composting facilities under expert guidance.
Climate Resilience: Assist with the setup of irrigation systems and moisture monitoring to adapt to drought conditions.
Community Coordination: Help coordinate with Healthy Acadia’s gleaning initiative and school programs to facilitate food distribution.
Digital & Outreach: Contribute to a digital garden diary and help create social media posts or flyers to boost public engagement.
Education: Assist in delivering tours and workshops on topics like "green" growing and nutritional recipe demonstrations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Must be a registered student for Summer or Fall 2026. Rising seniors or master’s students preferred. Academic qualifications in sustainable agriculture, soil science, food systems development, or related fields.
Experience: Vegetable gardening or farming experience is required.
Research Interests: Interest in climate change adaptation, pollinator management, or sustainable waste management is desirable but not required.
Soft Skills: Demonstrated leadership skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
Outreach: Experience developing educational programming for youth, seniors, or the public and expertise in managing volunteers.
Communication: Strong digital writing/communications skills; facility with social media is desirable.
Technical Requirements: Must be capable of digital record management and communication, including access to a cell phone and computer, and proficiency with email and Google Drive.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs., working on uneven ground, and using basic gardening/landscaping tools.
Environment & Flexibility: Must be willing to work primarily outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions. Requires flexibility to accommodate early mornings or evening public programming.

Duties:
Assists the Community Garden Manager, Green Ellsworth volunteers and partner organizations in successfully launching the first full growing season of an Everybody Harvests Community Garden in Ellsworth Falls.
Assists the Garden Manager in implementing organic practices in the planting, care and harvesting of garden crops which serve as educational models for volunteers and the public.
Works closely with Healthy Acadia’s Gleaning program, school garden and food services staff as well as volunteers and the public to minimize any food waste and facilitate distribution.
Assists the Garden Manager in expanding the existing irrigation system, introducing moisture monitoring mechanisms, implementing a cover cropping and crop rotation plans.
Assists with digital record keeping and photographic documentation as necessary.
Assists in the delivery of public gardening and nutritional programming as requested.
Timelines and rate of pay: 10-12 weeks, 40 hrs/week, $17/hour.
Working conditions:
Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, working on uneven ground, using basic gardening/landscaping tools and equipment
Must be willing to work primarily out of doors in a wide range of weather conditions
Must be capable of digital record management and communication (access to a cell phone and a computer, capacity to use email, set up google drives and run basic software and applications)
Will require flexibility in scheduling to accommodate some early morning work times and/or late afternoon/evening harvesting and public programming
Qualifications:
Enterest or experience in vegetable gardening or farming,
Academic qualifications relating to sustainable agriculture, soil science, food systems development and planning or related fields desirable
Strong digital writing/communications and data management skills; facility with social media desirable
Demonstrated capacity to both work independently and contribute effectively to team-based projects
